We met with the nurse today. She was going to come here, but we needed to meet with her ASAP just in case we heard from the consulate that we could go down there soon to do paper work. No such luck in hearing, or calling, them. We ended up going to the neuvola instead of her coming here. It was actually a great walk. Much nicer than the previously attempted one.
We talked a lot about the birth and our reflections on language issues and communication in general, plus their hands off approach as midwives. How much is cultural? It was nice to just sit and talk about it with someone who is interested in and able to possibly change the way things are done, especially concerning English speakers and how they are treated.
She was able to better explain what happened after the birth. I guess the when they sewed the tear in the perineum there was still blood and bleeding behind the stitches. The hematoma was the size of two eggs (!!!) and was located near the site of the tear. So I guess in surgery they undid the original stitches, drained the hematoma, and put in a tube to continue to drain it just in case.
Virve checked the babe for all his reflexes and things. And we made a great new parent misstep. We forgot to bring extra diapers. I did think about it before getting ready to leave, but then forgot! And we would have need more than one extra for our hour and half long appointment. He's a busy guy.
We had the doula, Henna visit us. She brought a potted flower for me, and a pair of pants, a crocheted blanket and knit socks for Edwin. From what we could understand, there are women all over Finland who make socks and blankets and donate them to be given to babies. I don't think it was just through the doula organization. All great gifts.
Well, I think that's about it for now. He might wake up soon, but he looks pretty cozy in his new pants, his mama knit sweater, laying on his sheepskin under his new blanket.
