Deutchland!

Wir sind hier!

Hello! We are now in Freiburg. Thanks to Dad for the new title inspiration. I really like writing and putting up pictures in one place, and then of course getting emails from everyone because they understand that I am reaching out in a way, it's just not uber personalized.

We are just now getting back on schedule, even if it's skewed a little late. For example Edwin went to bed last night at 10 pm. But that's better than 1 am and not sleeping well the whole night. Getting there, just not as fast as it would be if it was just us. We have been busy this weekend catching up and visiting with the two other students in John's program who will be in Freiburg for the second year, Brian, the Irishman, and Felipe, the Brazilian. Also Abel, another Brazilian, is visiting for the weekend from Nancy, France. So we've had dinner at our apartment the last two nights as well as hiking together yesterday and hopefully walking around the city today. They are a good group.

Here are a few photos of our apartment. We are on the top floor of a woman's house. She also rents a room to a lady from Taiwan who is studying language. We walk through the dining room to get to the stairs which are just like they would be in any house. We walk past the other rooms and just keep going up the the third floor. Before you get too nervous, there is a pocket door at the top of the stairs and doors to every room, so we can close Edwin off.

To the right is the main room with a bed, a couch, a desk, a coffee table, a table for eating and the kitchenette (with no oven, so keep the creative stove top recipies coming!). We like how bright it is even if it's not our aesthetic.

There are only two chairs to go around the table. Not so great for dinner parties. And we also need a seat for Edwin. Maybe a high chair will be the way to go here. Unfortunately, I feel like we will either need to put up a carpet or lay down plastic under him when he eats. Or maybe we'll just have high expectations...

On to the other rooms. Straight ahead is the bedroom and to the right is the bathroom.

Here is the bathroom. Nothing too special. Although our friends commented on the number of towels we have. The apartment came furnished and I guess that meant towels, sheets, etc.

The shower is on an interesting 45 degree angle. Also there is a knob for turning the water on and off, and a separate knob to turn it from cold to hot - it's even labeled with degrees. I'm not sure what I think yet. You step up into the shower but your feet land in a little tub. If we filled it and set Edwin in it might be just above his belly button. We haven't tried it yet but it seems like it will work well.

A little bedroom under the eaves. A closet to the left.

The gang hanging out. A little awkward eating situation though. Notice Brian's tiny ottoman on the right.
